The Elan Corporation was an Irish-American biotech company with 400 collaborations (2012); At the end of 2007 the company had 2000 employees. Elan specializes in diseases of the central nervous system such as multiple sclerosis , Alzheimer's disease, and Parkinson's disease , but also makes antibiotics.
Elan partnered with Biogen , the world's third largest biotech company after Genentech and Amgen . The two companies jointly launched the MS drug Tysabri in 2005 , but had to take it off the market after a short time due to a death. After the filing of joint applications for the extended use of Tysabri in January 2013, Biogen bought its partner Elan's 50% stake in the Tysabri rights for 3.25 billion dollars and ended the cooperation agreement.
In the area of Alzheimer's research, Elan is working on inhibitors of gamma and beta secretase , which could prevent the development of the disease. The company is a member of the ISEQ Overall Index on the Irish Stock Exchange .
In December 2013, Perrigo announced it had completed the acquisition of Elan for $ 8.6 billion.
