Elaphebolion

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Elaphebolion ( ancient Greek Ἐλαφηβολιών ) was a month in several ancient Greek calendars .

In the Attic calendar , Elaphebolion was the ninth month of the year after the Anthesterion and before the Munichion . In the Julian calendar , it roughly corresponds to the month of March . The name is traced back to a festival of sacrifice for Artemis Elaphebolos that was held this month , although there is no evidence of a festival Elaphebolia for Attica . There is evidence that a festival of this name existed for the city of Hyampolis , and one is mentioned at Athenaios without specifying the location .

The calendar of the Chalcidian city of Apollonia also shows a month of Elaphebolion, which here, as in the Attic calendar, follows a month of Anthesterion. It is therefore believed that, like the Attic month, it fell in spring. In the Carian city of Iasos , the Elaphebolion takes the place of the month of Artemision in most of the calendars of Ionian cities .
