description
The 27 meter high tower was erected in 1862 and with its red and white ribbons it is a landmark of the Abaco Islands. The beacon went into operation in 1864. It is one of the last beacons in the world that is still powered by a kerosene lamp and the drive of the first order Fresnel lens is manually wound by a beacon keeper. The Elbow Reef Lighthouse Society takes care of the maintenance of the historic lighthouse, whose 150th birthday was celebrated in June 2014.
