history

The islands' natives were believed to be the Lucaya Indians.

From 1783 to 1785 loyalists from New York , North Carolina , South Carolina, and Florida settled on the island.

For a long time, the salvage of ships that ran into distress off the island was a source of livelihood. As a result, not all of the island's residents were pleased with the lighthouse being built in 1864.

In the 1850s, numerous residents fell victim to a cholera epidemic .

Hope Town was the center of wooden shipbuilding on Abaco from 1840 to 1921 . With the advent of steam shipping , the demand for wooden ships decreased. The wood industry temporarily offered jobs. From 1916 onwards, many residents emigrated to Nassau , Miami or Key West in search of work .

From 1870 to 1938, the manufacture of bath sponges was an important source of income. During the US prohibition period 1920–1933, alcohol smuggling was also an economic factor. In 1924 a telegraph office was opened.

The first hotels and rental apartments were built in the 1960s. Since then, tourism has developed into the island's most important industry.
