Eleazar ben Pedat
R. Eleasar ben Pedat (also: Eleazar ben Pedat , usually without naming the father: Eleazar , also: Leazar , not to be confused with the Tannaite Eleazar ben Shammua ) was an Amora of the so-called third generation in Palestine . He probably died in 279 .
He was a born Babylonian and a student of Samuel and Rab there . He came as many of the Palestinian Amoraim his generation to Palestine, where he was one of the main disciples and followers of Johanan was. He took over Jochanan's school in Tiberias , but died that same year.
He was equally well versed in Halacha and Aggada . It is quoted over and over again throughout the Talmud . He particularly praised the virtues of justice and charity.
Coming from a priestly family, he - like Chija bar Abba II - did not accept any priestly gifts. He was destitute, weak and sickly, but was called the overlord of Palestine because of his intellectual gifts and extensive knowledge . The Talmud provides numerous examples and stories about his humility and modesty.
Its main traders are Abbahu and Benjamin ben Jefet.
