Eleazar Huerta

Eleazar Huerta Valcárcel (born December 22, 1903 in Tobarra , Albacete province , † January 28, 1974 in Santiago de Chile ) was a Chilean Romance scholar and Hispanist of Spanish origin.

life and work

Eleazar Huerta Valcárcel studied law in Madrid and became a socialist politician, from 1936 a member of parliament, and in 1937 mayor of Albacete . At the same time he taught at the local teacher training college. After the civil war he went into exile in Chile. In 1957 he became a professor for Spanish and world literature at the newly founded Universidad Austral de Chile in Valdivia . Together with Guillermo Araya Goubet, he built up the Spanish department there and in 1964 co-founded the magazine Estudios filológicos . In Tobarra, the municipal cultural institute bears his name.
