The medieval Elendenhaus (called Elendshaus in the list of monuments ) is a listed building in Pasewalk , a town in the district of Vorpommern-Greifswald in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . The Gothic house is considered to be the oldest secular building in Pasewalk.

history

The building was probably built in the 1350s as a residential building in connection with the St. Mary's Church, which was built further north at that time . The building stands on the southern wall of the churchyard in the former cemetery. It served as a hostel for pilgrims and destitute foreigners in the centuries that followed . In 1563 it was first referred to as a beggars and poor house . After the Reformation , the foundation was dissolved and it served as an apartment for the city's gravedigger and church servant . In the 21st century, the community used the house as an administrative building.

The use of the house over the centuries is unclear. The two-zone facade structure as well as the east-west orientation of the building indicate a sacred building. The west wall has wall connections that indicate a planned extension of the building. Architectural historians believe that a combination of different uses was possible. In 2017, there were severe defects in the building. A poor foundation and moisture have damaged the masonry. The building had to be evacuated.

architecture

The two-storey building was made of red brick . Every facade of the house looks different. On the north and south sides there are several arched windows that have been rebuilt over the centuries, some of which are walled up. They are also edged with red brick. There is a simple gable roof above . The original plaster is no longer there. In the interior there is a two-storey subdivision that dates from the 18th century. The house has a cellar that has been filled in.
