Eleni (song)
Eleni is the most successful composition by the Dutch brothers Cees and Thomas Tol from Volendam . Her single title Eleni was in the charts in 1990 not only in the Netherlands , Belgium and Germany , but also in many other countries such as the USA . In addition to the original version by Tol & Tol , the song was also recorded in a joint vocal version with the Greek singer Corina Vamvakari and the Greek singer Demis Roussos .

The song is based on a true story from the autobiographical book of the same name by Nicholas Gage and tells a war drama from the Greek civil war , where over 28,000 Greek children were forcibly taken away from their parents by the communist partisans and "brought to safety" in various communist countries. The book was filmed in 1985 under the direction of Peter Yates as a US war drama under the original book title Eleni (film) .
