Nicholas Gage
Nicholas Gage (actually Greek Νικόλαος Γκατζογιάννης Nikolaos "Nikos" Gatzoyiannis , born July 23, 1939 in Lia in the north-west Greek region of Epirus ) is a Greek-American author and investigative journalist .
Gage grew up in the small mountain village of Lia in the north-west Greek region of Epirus, emigrated with his siblings to the United States in 1949 and studied in Boston and New York City . He was first known as an investigative journalist for the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times , he rose to the chief reporter and foreign correspondent of the New York Times . He summarized his coverage of the American Mafia in the bestsellers The Mafia Is Not An Equal Opportunity Employer (1971) and Mafia, USA (1972). Gage was also involved in exposing Vice President Spiro Agnew's corrupt past that led to Agnew's resignation. During the Watergate Affair , Gage was the first reporter to hear about the Nixon tapes. His experience as a journalist formed the basis for the television show The Andros Targets .
Gage became internationally known through the novel The Bourlotas fortune (1975, German "Die Goldene Flotte") and v. a. through two autobiographical books, the bestsellers Eleni (1983) and A Place for Us (1989, German "Elenis Kinder").
Eleni describes the life of his family in the small mountain village of Lia during the Second World War and the Greek Civil War . Gage's mother Eleni was executed by the partisans for arranging the escape of her children from the village occupied by the communist partisans. Thirty years later, Gage researched the history and circumstances of her death and who was responsible for it. The book has been translated into 32 languages, won first prize from the British Royal Society of Literature and was nominated for Best Biography by the American National Book Critic's Circle. Eleni was successfully made into a film in 1985, with John Malkovich taking on the role of Nicholas Gage . Ronald Reagan declared in 1987 that this film was an inspiration to his summits to end the American-Soviet arms race.
A Place for Us (German title "Elenis Kinder") describes the experiences of Gage and his relatives in the 1950s as immigrants in Worcester . Gage also wrote the text for several illustrated books about Greece. His latest book with the title Greek Fire (2000, German "Greek Fire") deals with the relationship between the Greek shipowner Aristotle Onassis and the opera singer Maria Callas .
Gage is Honorary President of the World Council of Epirus and recipient of the International Center in New York's Award of Excellence. He gives lectures all over the world and writes a. a. for the New York Times and Vanity Fair . Gage was an executive producer of the film The Godfather III and wrote as co-author of Mario Puzo with an early draft of the script.
