Eleoncio Mercedes

Eleoncio Mercedes (* 12. September 1957 in La Ramona , Dominican Republic ; † 22. December 1985 ) was a Dominican boxer in the flyweight .

Professional career

In 1978 he successfully began his professional career. On November 6, 1982 he boxed against Freddy Castillo for the WBC World Championship and won by split judge decision. However, he already lost this belt in his first title defense to Charlie Magri in March of the following year through knockout.

He was violently killed in 1985 when he got into an argument with a police officer after a traffic accident. Mercedes is said to have drawn a gun, whereupon the policeman shot him.
