Eli Janney
Eli Janney , actually Eli Hamilton Janney , (born November 12, 1831 in Loudoun County , Virginia , † June 16, 1912 in Alexandria , Virginia) was an American inventor .
In 1868 the freight office secretary designed an automatic coupling for rail vehicles and patented it on April 29, 1873. The Janney coupling named after him became mandatory equipment in the USA , but was also used in Canada and Mexico as well as in Australia , South Africa and the People's Republic of China .
