Vilmos Fraknói

Vilmos Fraknói (born February 17, 1843 in Ürmény / Urmín, today Mojmírovce , Slovakia , † November 20, 1924 in Budapest ) was a well-known Hungarian historian and Catholic clergyman.

Life

Fraknói ( German: Wilhelm Frankl ), who came from a Jewish family, studied Roman Catholic theology and philosophy in Tyrnau and at the spiritual seminaries in Gran (Esztergom) and Pest . In 1865 he was ordained a priest.

Only 17 years old, he won an academic prize with the (Hungarian) script Sketch of the State of the Culture of the Magyars under the Dukes (Pest 1861) and soon afterwards a second prize awarded by the University of Pest with the treatise Origin and Historical Development of the Palatine and regional judge (Pest 1863).

In 1864 he became professor in Tyrnau, 1865 in Gran, 1872 secretary of the Hungarian Academy, 1875 custodian of the Hungarian National Museum , 1878 Canon in Nagyvárad and in 1879 general secretary of the academy and titular abbot of Szekszárd and titular bishop of Rab .

From 1870 he was a member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences , and he also founded the Hungarian Historical Institute in Rome.
