Johann Vitez (* 1408 in Sredna at Križevci , Croatia; † 9. August 1472 in Esztergom , Hungary; Croat Ivan Vitez od Sredne , Hungarian Janos Vitez de Zredna ) was a Croatian Humanist , from 1445 bishop of Oradea (now Oradea , Romania ) and from 1465 Archbishop of Gran (today: Esztergom, Hungary ). His father was Dénes von der Zredna (Croatian Dionizije od Sredne ) in the Slavonian county Bjelovar-Križevci . His nephew was Janus Pannonius .

Life

Johann Vitez attended the University of Zagreb in 1434 and later the University of Vienna . He initially worked as a clerk in the secret chancellery of the Hungarian King Sigismund , where he was promoted to assessor . In 1438 he was custodian of Zagreb. In 1440 he belonged to the embassy that presented the election conditions to Wladyslaw I in Cracow.

In 1443 he became provost in Wardein (today Oradea ). As a relative of Johann Hunyadi , he took over the upbringing of his children during his reign. In 1445 he became bishop of Wardein. As Chancellor of the Regent and later King Matthias Corvinus he was entrusted with numerous diplomatic tasks. In 1465 he became Archbishop of Esztergom (Gran).

In the same year he founded the Universitas Istropolitana in Pressburg at the behest of Matthias Corvinus, King of Hungary . He had let his nephew Janus Pannonius study in Italy. He then promoted him to the bishopric of Pécs.

In 1471 he joined the conspiracy against King Matthias and became one of their leaders. Matthias initially forgave him, but then had him imprisoned in the castle of Visegrád and ultimately kept him under house arrest in Esztergom, where he died in the summer of 1472.
