Dénes Szécsi (* 1400 or 1410 in Eger , Hungary ; † February 1, 1465 in Esztergom ) was a Hungarian cardinal and first primate of Hungary.

Life

Dénes Miklós Szécsi, (Desiderius Széchy, Dionysius) also Zech, Zecho or Zechus was born as the sixth of eight children of the Hungarian aristocrat Miklós Széchy de Felsõlendva ( magister tavernicorum ) and his wife Ilona Garai. He studied at the University of Vienna in 1426 and at the University of Bologna in 1433, where he received his doctorate in 1434 ( canon law ). Further studies at the University of Padua followed.

On August 21, 1438 he was appointed bishop of Nitra . On June 5, 1439 he was appointed Bishop of Eger . In the consistory of December 18, 1439, he was created cardinal by Pope Eugene IV . On February 15, 1440, Cardinal Szécsi was appointed Archbishop and Metropolitan of Esztergom . He took part in the 1447 conclave in which Cardinal Tommaso Parentucelli was elected Pope Nicholas V , who gave him the title of "Primate of Hungary" and who is still associated with the Archbishopric of Esztergom.

In the Provincial Synod in Esztergom in 1450, he campaigned for the restoration of monastic discipline and encouraged the observance of celibacy . In 1453 he rebuilt the basilica in Esztergom.

He died on February 1, 1465 and was buried in Esztergom Cathedral.
