Elias Stein (chess player)
Elias Stein (born February 5, 1748 in Forbach (Moselle) , † September 12, 1812 in The Hague ) was a Dutch chess player .
Stein was employed as a chess teacher for the sons of Wilhelm V and thus introduced chess to Dutch high society . The Elector of Cologne and Gustav III played in Spa . of Sweden against him.
Stein was the author of a number of chess textbooks and contributed to the theory of chess openings and endgames . He looked at chess strategy like strategy in military affairs. In his book Nouvel essai sur le jeu des Echecs he encountered the move 1. d2 – d4 with f7 – f5, which marked the birth of the Dutch Defense .
