The Elias TA-1 is a double-decker - trainer aircraft of the US manufacturer G. Elias and Brother. The TA-1 was tested by the United States Army Air Service (USAAS); however, an order for series production was not placed.

history

The three Elias-Werke aircraft purchased by USAAS in 1920 were given the military designation TA-1. Both wings of the single-handled biplane had the same span and were conventionally constructed from wood and covered with fabric. With the exception of the equipment with radial engines of a new type, the aircraft did not have any noteworthy advanced design features. Two machines are said to have been equipped with a newly developed 200 HP radial engine Lawrance J-1 and one with the older British radial engine ABC Wasp with 170 HP.

During the comparison flights carried out from 1921 to 1923 at McCook Field , the Air Service classified the flight performance as inferior to its competitors Dayton-Wright TA-3 and Huff-Daland TW-5 . In a newspaper report from June 1921, the Wasp machine was described as an aircraft with good flight characteristics. Further development was abandoned and the aircraft were scrapped in 1926.
