The Seversky SEV-2PA was a fighter aircraft made by the American manufacturer Seversky Aircraft Corporation in the 1930s.
history
The development of the SEV-2PA, which Seversky called " convoy fighter ", took place around the same time as work on the Seversky AP-1 , which was used as a prototype for the P-35 fighter aircraft . In contrast to the AP-1, the SEV-2PA was designed with two seats, but used a very similar cell construction . Both a variant with land chassis (SEV-2PA-L) and an amphibious version (SEV-2PA-A) were offered.
The drive consisted of a Wright R-1820 -G2 or -G3-Cyclone nine- cylinder radial engine , which delivered an output of 1000 hp or 875 hp. The armament included two 7.62 mm or 12.7 mm machine guns in the wings, one 7.62 mm machine gun in the rear cockpit stand and two fuselage machine guns. A bomb load of 227 kg at wing external load stations could be carried as a drop weapon.
At the beginning of 1939 Seversky went on a sales tour in Europe with an SEV-2PA-L, which was equipped for this with a 1100-hp Pratt & Whitney R-1830. At the instigation of the Air Ministry , the Airplane and Armament Experimental Establishment (A & AEE) at Martlesham Heath carried out some test flights with the machine in March 1939. The Soviet Union procured one copy each in the land and amphibious version together with a production license, which, however, did not result in actual production.
Japan secretly ordered 20 machines for the Imperial Navy , which were to be used as escort fighters over China. The aircraft bearing the Japanese military designation A8V1 (factory designation SEV-2PA-B3), however, turned out to be unsuitable for their intended role because of their poor maneuverability and climbing performance. Instead, they were used as reconnaissance aircraft over central China, and two copies of the Asahi Shimbun newspaper were later given.
Sweden ordered 52 copies of the SEV-2PA-A as dive combat aircraft , but only two copies were actually delivered to Sweden; the rest of the order lot was taken over by USAAC , which used the model as an advanced training aircraft AT-12 Guardsmen .
