The Seversky XP-41 (factory designation AP-4D) was a prototype fighter aircraft made by the American manufacturer Seversky Aircraft Corporation in the 1930s.

history

Seversky XP-41, the arrow mark on the side of the fuselage, all aircraft carried during their testing at Wright Field

The development basis for the XP-41 was the Seversky P-35 of which the last copy of the first 77 machines was equipped with a more powerful engine. Seversky chose the 1200 hp Pratt & Whitney R- 1830-19 with a two-stage mechanical loader for medium operating heights. In addition, the XP-41 received an improved cockpit cover and a chassis that can be retracted flat into the wing. The cell thus corresponded to the standard of the AP-4 , which was developed at the same time at the company's own risk and later led to the P-43 .

The XP-41 with service serial number 36-430 was delivered to the United States Army Air Corps (USAAC) in February 1939, which was testing the new pattern at Wright Field . The Air Corps then spoke out in favor of the AP-4, which used the same engine, but a turbocharger instead of the mechanical compressor for charging. Development of the XP-41 was then discontinued.
