Elias of Nisibis

Elias of Nisibis (Syriac: Bar Šīnāyā, Arabic. Iliyyā ibn Šīnā or Illiyā al-Nasībī) (born February 11, 975 ; † July 18, 1046 in Nisibis ) was metropolitan of the East Syrian Church of the East in Nisibis and writer in Syrian and Arabic language.

Elias was born in the small town of Sinn (Šennā), north of Takrit, was an early monk in the nearby Mār Sim'ān monastery and ordained a priest in 994. From 1002 to 1007 he officiated as Bishop of Bayt Nūhadrā. On December 3, 1008, he received the cathedra of the Metropolitan of Nisibis and administered the office until his death at the age of 71. He was buried in the church of Mayyāfāriqin.

Elias wrote a chronicle in the Syriac language, which reached from "Creation" to the year 1018 and was divided into two parts. He could no longer write a planned church history .
