Elie Spivak

Elie Spivak (born February 2, 1902 in Uman , † July 23, 1960 in Toronto ) was a Canadian violinist and music teacher of Ukrainian origin.

Spivak studied from 1910 to 1915 at the Paris Conservatory with Henri Berthelier and in 1916 at the Royal College of Manchester with Adolf Brodsky . In 1923 he founded the Elie Spivak String Quartet with which he appeared on the BBC , among others . After a stay in New York, he went to Toronto in 1925. There he taught at the Royal Conservatory of Music , played first violin in the Conservatory String Quartet from 1929 to 1942 and was concertmaster of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra from 1931 to 1948 .

In 1945 he played the North American premiere of Aram Chatschaturjan's Violin Concerto with the Boston Pops Orchestra . As a guest of the Jerusalem String Quartet , he toured Israel for five months in 1950. From 1951 to 1956 he directed the Spivak String Quartet . In addition to his work at the Royal Conservatory , he also taught at the University Settlement Music School . His students include Doreen Hall , Julian Kolkowski , John Montague , Pearl Palmason , Walter Prystawski , Stanley Solomon , Steven Staryk and David Zafer .
