Eliot Higgins (2015)

Eliot Higgins (* 1979 in Shrewsbury ) is a British blogger and internet journalist. He runs the investigative internet platform Bellingcat . In 2012, Eliot Higgins was the first to uncover the use of cluster bombs and barrel bombs in Syria and analyzed the crash of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 over eastern Ukraine.

origin

After dropping out of media studies, Eliot Higgins worked as a finance clerk for a textile manufacturer and then worked for a dormitory for refugees.

Brown Moses Blog

In March 2012 he started reporting on the weapon systems used in the civil war in Syria on the Brown Moses Blog . Higgins had only acquired specialist knowledge and had no background knowledge of the Arab world. He was the first to use video clips to show on the Internet that the Syrian government had used barrel and cluster bombs against the population. He was also able to prove the route of military equipment and weapons from Croatia into the hands of Syrian opposition fighters who had got there with the support of Saudi Arabia and with the knowledge of the USA .

His research in the Syrian civil war was considered faster than the professional media with the same quality.

Bellingcat

In July 2014 he founded the Internet platform Bellingcat , which should also enable other Internet activists to participate in research through crowdsourcing . In 2015, it proved that the MH-17 passenger plane was shot down over eastern Ukraine, probably by Russia . Higgins participated in several reports on the war in Syria and the war in eastern Ukraine, including with the Atlantic Council .

For their research, he and Bellingcat received the special prize of the Hanns-Joachim-Friedrichs-Prize of the ARD in 2015 .
