Elisabeth Cross (Romania)

The Elisabeth-Kreuz , also called Elisabeth-Orden ( Romanian Crucea Elisabeta ), is a Romanian order for women, which was founded on October 6th, 1878 by Prince Charles I of Romania .

Elizabeth order

Princess Elizabeth of Romania , with the approval of her husband, honored women who had made a name for themselves in the field of nursing in the Balkans War of 1877/1878 against the Ottoman Empire or who had distinguished themselves for the army through significant donations and gifts.

Order decoration

A golden cross with four smaller crosses on the arms of the large cross. In the middle of the cross a round medallion. The initials "EE" for Princess Elisabeth are embossed on the border. There is a crown above it . The back of the medallion shows the year 1877/1878 in the middle and the inscription "ALINARE SI MANGAERE".

Ribbon

The ribbon is light blue with gold stripes.

Others

In addition to the Romanian order, there was also a Bavarian order dedicated to St. Elisabeth. The Order of St. Elizabeth was donated on November 19, 1766 by the Electress of Palatinate Maria Elisabeth at her name festival; both princely persons and the court ladies were honored with it. The sign of the order was illuminated for princely persons; the cross is enameled white; in the middle you can see St. Elisabeth seated; on the other hand is the name of the founder in looped ciphers. The ribbon is blue with a red border; it was worn with a small bow on the left chest. The obligations of this order were to pray for one another in life and death and to hold a soul mass every year. When receiving this medal, four ducats were imposed for the poor, and whenever one forgot to wear the medal, one ducat was paid as a punishment.

There was also a three-class Austro-Hungarian Elisabeth Order , which was founded in 1898 and awarded until 1918.
