Marie Elisabeth Auguste von Pfalz-Sulzbach (born January 17, 1721 in Mannheim , † August 17, 1794 in Weinheim ) was the eldest granddaughter of Elector Karl Philipp of the Palatinate and through her marriage to Karl IV. Theodor herself Electress of the Palatinate and of Bavaria .

Life

Her parents were Joseph Karl von Pfalz-Sulzbach (1694–1729) and Elisabeth von Pfalz-Neuburg (1693–1728), daughter of Elector Karl III. Philip . Her sisters were Maria Franziska von Pfalz-Sulzbach (1724–1794) and Maria Anna von Pfalz-Sulzbach (1722–1790).

On January 17, 1742 she married her cousin Karl Theodor von Pfalz-Sulzbach , who became Elector of the Palatinate in December 1742 and in 1777 also the new Elector of Bavaria . Their relationship was not very happy. During their marriage, only one child, a son named Franz Ludwig Joseph, was born. The long-awaited ancestral owner died, however, to the great dismay of his parents, one day after his birth on June 29, 1761. The couple have lived largely apart since then. Elisabeth Auguste retired to her castle in Oggersheim , of which only the pilgrimage or castle church with the coat of arms and dedicatory inscription of the Electress still exists today. At the end of 1793 she had to flee from Oggersheim from the approaching French revolutionary troops to Weinheim , on the right bank of the Rhine, where she lived in the castle there . Her personal physicians were Franz Joseph von Oberkamp from 1750 and later the Heidelberg doctor and obstetrician Franz Anton Mai .

Despite the childlessness of his wife, her various lovers, such as Karl Ludwig Freiherr von Rodenhausen, and the elector's numerous mistresses, Karl Theodor never disowned his wife and only entered into another marriage with Archduchess Maria Leopoldine of Austria-Este after her death in 1794 , but which turned out to be the most unfortunate part of his life.

Her burial took place in the Carmelite Church in Heidelberg , after the abolition of the monastery, the coffin was transferred to the St. Michaelskirche in Munich in 1805 .

Awards

Awarded the Russian Order of St. Catherine on July 5, 1760 . She herself was the founder and master of the order of the Electoral Palatinate Ladies of St. Elisabeth .
