Maria Anna Sophie Sabina Angela Franziska Xaveria, Princess of Poland and Saxony (born August 29, 1728 in Dresden , †  February 17, 1797 in Munich ), was Electress of Bavaria from July 9, 1747 to December 30, 1777 by marriage .

Life

Maria Anna was a daughter of Friedrich August II. , Elector of Saxony and King of Poland (as August III.), And the Austrian Archduchess Maria Josefa (daughter of Emperor Joseph I ) and thus granddaughter of Augustus the Strong . She had a total of 14 siblings, including the later Elector of Saxony Friedrich Christian and the French heir to the throne Maria Josepha .

Maria Anna married the Bavarian Elector Maximilian III in 1747 . Joseph . The marriage, however, remained childless and the old Bavarian line of Wittelsbacher died in 1777 with Maximilian III. Joseph out. After his death, she chose Fürstenried Castle as the widow's residence . Maria Anna is the founder of the women's foundation in Munich.

Historically, Maria Anna only emerged after the death of her husband. His successor as elector, Karl Theodor , had no internal relationship with Bavaria and was willing to swap parts of Bavaria for Upper Austria in 1778 and all of Bavaria for the Austrian Netherlands a few years later. Maria Anna and Maria Anna von Pfalz-Sulzbach , who saw Bavaria's independence threatened, contacted Frederick II of Prussia and Karl Theodor's heir, Charles II August, and the Prussian king threatened both Bavaria and Austria with war if the plan should Karl Theodors can be realized. Emperor Joseph II shied away from another war with Prussia and finally dropped his plans in 1785.

Maria Anna, who has been very venerated in Bavaria since then, was buried in the Theatine Church in Munich in 1797 . Her heart was buried separately and is located in the Chapel of Grace in Altötting .
