Elisabeth , Countess of Hereford (also Elisabeth von Rhuddlan ) (* August 1282 in Rhuddlan Castle ; † May 5, 1316 ) was an English king's daughter.

origin

Elisabeth came from the Plantagenet family . She was the youngest daughter of King Edward I and his first wife, Eleanor of Castile . She was born in Rhuddlan Castle in early August 1282 during the conquest of Wales .

Life

Her father made an early agreement to marry her to Johann , the heir of Count Florens V of Holland . During the Franco-English War from 1294 onwards , her father sought allies against France. When Count Florens abandoned his alliance with England, however, he was murdered in 1296 by rebellious nobles, presumably with English support. His young son and heir Johann renewed the alliance with England, whereupon his wedding to Elisabeth took place in England in January 1297. However, at her father's request, Elisabeth initially stayed in England until she traveled to Holland in autumn 1297 because of her husband's urgent requests . After the death of her husband in November 1299, she returned to England, where her father again provided for her support. On November 14, 1302, she married the English magnate Humphrey de Bohun, 4th Earl of Hereford, in Westminster Abbey . Similar to the Earl of Gloucester in 1290 , her husband had to sign a contract with the king in order to marry a king's daughter in which he handed over his possessions to the king. After the marriage he got his property back together with his wife, so that Elisabeth would have received his property in the event of his death. Unlike Gloucester, however, she should not have bequeathed the property to children from a later marriage. Even after her marriage to Bohun, Elisabeth often lived at her father's court until he died in 1307.

progeny

Elisabeth's first marriage to Johann von Holland had remained childless. With her second husband, Humphrey de Bohun, she had eleven children:

  1. Hugh de Bohun († 1305 as a child)
  2. Mary de Bohun († 1305 as a child)
  3. John de Bohun, 5th Earl of Hereford (1306-1336)
  4. Humphrey de Bohun, 6th Earl of Hereford (1309-1361)
  5. Edward de Bohun (around 1311-1334)
  6. William de Bohun, 1st Earl of Northampton († 1360)
  7. Eleanor de Bohun († 1363), ∞ I 1327 James Butler, 1st Earl of Ormonde , ∞ II Thomas Dagworth
  8. Margaret de Bohun († 1391) ∞ Hugh de Courtenay, 2nd Earl of Devon
  9. Edmund de Bohun ∞ Maud de Bohun, 2nd Baroness Segrave († around 1334)
  10. Eneas de Bohun († before 1343)
  11. Isabella de Bohun († 1316)

She died shortly after the birth of her daughter Isabella and was buried in Walden Abbey , Essex , the family burial site of the Bohun family.
