from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Elisabeth Bourquin (born December 10, 1930 in Trogen AR ; † May 18, 1995 in St. Gallen ; resident in Sonvilier ) was a Swiss painter of the art brut and author.

life and work

Elisabeth Bourquin's parents ran a drugstore in Speicher AR . She also began an apprenticeship as a druggist, which she broke off. After that she worked as an assistant druggist in various places. In 1980 she had a complete breakdown. From 1985 until her death she lived in a home for the elderly in St. Gallen.

Between 1947 and 1980 Elisabeth Bourquin created an extensive, predominantly graphic work with religious, philosophical and time-critical content. Her work includes pencil, chalk and ink drawings, watercolors and oil paintings. "Their figures, who wriggle out of matter in suffering and pain and a thousand hardships, are the original sounds of a person in a time of industrial noise, of machine-pounding and tempo dynamics from dawn to dusk".

After 1980, Elisabeth Bourquin recorded her reflections in writing in diaries and she also edited several self-published publications.

The Museum in the warehouse thanks to the 2014 acquired collection of Mina and Joseph John in St. Gallen has the life work of Bourquin that Joseph John had purchased from their homes resolution.
