Elisabeth Gräb-Schmidt (* 1956 in Bad Säckingen ) is a German professor for systematic theology with a focus on ethics at the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen .

Life

Elisabeth Gräb-Schmidt studied Protestant theology in Göttingen, Berkeley, Heidelberg and Mainz. After the vicariate, she received her doctorate in Mainz in 1992 with a thesis on Karl Heim . In 2000 , she completed her habilitation with a thesis on technology ethics . From 2002 to 2010 she was a professor at the Justus Liebig University in Giessen . Since 2010 she has been a full professor for systematic theology with a focus on ethics and director of the Institute for Ethics at the Evangelical Theological Faculty of the University of Tübingen.

Elisabeth Gräb-Schmidt is married to the physicist Hans-Rudolf Schmidt and has two children. Her father, Pastor Paul Gräb, excelled as an art collector as well as in work with the handicapped and in social welfare and was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit, 1st class . Her brother, Wilhelm Gräb , was a professor of practical theology at the Humboldt University in Berlin .

Research priorities

Gräb-Schmidt mainly conducts research in the field of ethics, especially technology ethics and medical ethics. There are also publications on the dialogue between science and theology, on religious theory and interreligious dialogue, as well as on cultural hermeneutics and the philosophy of life. Another focus is the religious philosophy of Søren Kierkegaard .

Functions (selection)

Gräb-Schmidt is a member of numerous social and church bodies and chambers.

In 2018, Gräb-Schmidt was appointed to the German Ethics Council. Since 2015, Gräb-Schmidt has been a member of the Standing Senate Commission of the DFG for fundamental issues in genetic research. In 2013 he was appointed to the Central Ethics Commission (ZEKO) of the German Medical Association.

Gräb-Schmidt is a member of the EKD Council (since 2013) and the EKD's Chamber for Public Responsibility (since 2010).

In 2013 and 2016/17, Gräb-Schmidt was a fellow at the Max Weber College for Cultural and Social Studies in Erfurt. 2007–2018 Gräb-Schmidt was chairwoman of the theological working group in Pfullingen .

There are also numerous chairs ( Scientific Society for Theology and others) and editorships ( Journal for Evangelical Ethics , Journal for Theology and Church ).
