Elisabeth Psenner received her doctorate in 1963 at the University of Innsbruck with the work The Bozen Painter Anton Psenner in the Art of his Time in Art History . There she completed her habilitation in 1977 with a thesis on research on the problems of Roman and early Christian archeology in the Alpine region , which also involved a change from art history to archeology. In 1984 she took over the chair for Classical Archeology at the University of Innsbruck, succeeding Bernhard Neutsch , which she remained until 2008. She was the first woman in this position on the chair at Innsbruck University. Her successor was Erich Kistler .

Walde deals with the work of the painter Anton Psenner as well as with the influence of Greek art on Roman art in the provinces and their reception in modern art in Tyrol . One focus of the work is provincial Roman archeology in the Alpine region, such as research and knowledge transfer on the Via Claudia Augusta and Aguntum . Walde researches early Christian art as well as visual ancient communication and the self-portrayal of Roman society in the provinces. On her 65th birthday in 2005, the Festschrift Vis imaginum was dedicated to her.
