The Elizabeth Bay ( English Elizabeth Bay , Portuguese Golfo de Santa Estevão ) is a bay and former port - and diamond - mining town in the diamond area in southern Namibia . It is located about thirty kilometers south of the Lüderitz Bay and the city of Lüderitz ; south of Elizabeth Bay is Possession Island .

Economical meaning

From 1908 to 1950 and from 1991 to 1998 diamonds were mined here. In 2005 the mine was to be put back into operation for a maximum service life of eight years. Mining resumed in 2011 and continued up to and including 2018, despite an expected lifespan of four years. The mine is now (as of February 2018) for sale by Namdeb .

Elisabethbucht is now a ghost town and, due to its location in the restricted area, only partially accessible to tourists.
