Possession Island is an island in the South Atlantic on the southwest coast of Namibia . It belongs to the Penguin Islands and is the largest island in this group of islands with an area of 97 ha . It closes off Elizabeth Bay in the south.
The island measures 3.5 km from north to south or 4 km including the north upstream and less than 100 meters away and seven hectare "North Reef" and is a maximum of 700 meters wide. The south end of the island is 2.5 km west of the coast of Namibia and is separated from it by the Possession Road. The mostly flooded rocky reef of South Reef is just 500 meters further to the southwest.
On the east side is a small, temporarily inhabited settlement. There are also mining rights for the island.
Possession Island is part of the Meob-Chamais Marine Reserve . The island is best known for its population of penguins . However, the population decreased by 98% between 1956 and 1995 from over 23,000 breeding pairs to just under 900 breeding pairs.
