Mercury Iceland is a three hectares large rock island , on the Southern Atlantic Coast of Namibia , one hundred kilometers north of the Lüderitz area and 960 meters north of the nearest mainland point at the southern end of Spencer Bay . The island is part of the archipelago of the Penguin Islands and a breeding ground for many seabirds and was cultivated for many years by a station for mining guano . Today there is a weather station here and the island is the starting point for temporary research by up to two people.
The island also includes the North Islet , a rocky outcrop about 30 meters north of the main island and connected to it by a wooden walkway. Mercury Island is largely hollow and has six entrances to caves inside. The highest point on the island is 38 meters above sea level lying Jupiter Peak .
The island is part of the Meob-Chamais marine reserve and is home to the largest colony of African penguins in Namibia and the world's largest population of coastal shags ( Phalacrocorax neglectus ).
