Elizabeth flood 1404

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

On November 19, 1404 , the first Elisabethenflut hit the coast of the Netherlands in the provinces of Flanders and Zeeland , but the province of Holland was also affected. Around 3000 hectares of land were washed away in Flanders. Many polder areas south of the Westerschelde that were diked after 1374 were lost to the sea again.

The cities of IJzendijke and Hugevliet were swallowed up by the floods, and a storm surge of 1374 had already caused considerable damage. IJzendijke was later re-established elsewhere.
