Elise Honegger (born November 28, 1839 in Stäfa , † November 14, 1912 in Rotmonten , entitled to live in St. Gallen ) was a Swiss women's rights activist .

Life and work

Born in Stäfa and raised in St.Gallen, Elise Honegger married the printer Matthias Egger at the age of 28, from whom she separated in 1879.

Elise Honegger gained her first editorial experience with the women's supplement to the "Republikaners", a political newspaper that was published by her husband.

From 1879 she was the publisher and editor of the Schweizer Frauen-Zeitung in St. Gallen, the first women's magazine in Switzerland that not only dealt with topics related to fashion and household, but also (women's) politics.

In 1885 she initiated the first merger of Swiss women's organizations at national level, the Swiss Women's Association , of which she became the first president.

Elise Honegger campaigned for civil law issues such as share of benefits and freedom of marriage contract, as well as for the education of girls and gainful employment. She used her newspaper to inform readers about their rights and options, such as: B. the difference between separation of goods and combination of goods.
