Elisa stairs
The Elise staircase (also stairs at the wonderful structure ) is a 1905-built Grade II listed staircase in Wuppertal .
With 41 steps it connects the street Hofkamp in the Elberfeld district with Elisenstraße , which lies on the lower slope of the Hardt hill . The Elisenstrasse , and therefore the stairs, got its name after the Elisenhöhe on the Hardt. The Elisenhöhe was originally the location of a windmill, which the Elberfeld manufacturer and city councilor Engelbert Eller (1799–1861) acquired and had it converted into a lookout tower. He used the name with the permission of the Prussian Crown Prince Friedrich Wilhelm (later King Friedrich Wilhelm IV. ) In honor of his wife Elisabeth (1801–1873).
At the beginning of the stairs, the “Elisenstübchen” restaurant was once located in the iron house. The staircase was declared a monument on June 26, 1996.
In February 2009, the stairs were closed for a week because they were damaged by frost. A major renovation was carried out in 2000.
