Elissa Down
Elissa Down (born July 2, 1975 in Camden , New South Wales ) is an Australian film director and screenwriter .
Life
Elissa Down graduated from Curtin University in Perth with an art degree . In 2000 she presented her first short film , Samantha Stewart, Aged 14 . Six more short films followed by 2004, some of which she wrote the script for.
In 2008 she made her feature film debut with the film The Black Balloon . The film had its world premiere at the Berlinale 2008 as the opening film in the Generation Plus14 section. The Black Balloon is about a 16-year-old boy growing up in a family whose life is shaped by caring for his older, autistic brother. The film is based on the life experiences of Elissa Down, who grew up with two autistic brothers. Elissa Down was awarded the Transparent Bear at the Berlinale for this film . The film was also voted Best Australian Film of 2008 by the Australian Film Institute .
