Élivágar ( Old Norse ), also Germanized Eliwagar , is the collective name for eleven rivers in the Snorra-Edda Snorri Sturlusons . In detail they are called Fimbulthul, Fjorm, Gjoll, Gunnthra, Hrid, Leipt, Slid, Svol, Sylg, Vid and Ylg. These poured from the Hvergelmir fountain and filled the empty space that existed before the world was created. The waters of these rivers froze to ice in the north. In the south, however, this was prevented by the sparks from the Muspellsheim flame world . A human-like being named Ymir emerged from the mixture of water, embers and steam .
