Elizabeth Craik
Elizabeth Mary Craik (* 25. January 1939 in Portmoak , Scotland ) is a British Gräzistin and Honorary Professor of Classics at the University of St Andrews .
Craik studied Classics at the University of St Andrews with Kenneth Dover , where he earned an MA in 1960. Further studies at Girton College at the University of Cambridge led to an M.Litt in 1963.
She was then a Research Fellow in Greek at the University of Birmingham (1963–1964). In 1964 she moved back to the University of St Andrews as an Assistant Lecturer and stayed there until 1997. There she was last Senior Lecturer in Greek. In 1993 she received a one-year research grant from the Wellcome Trust to work on a translation of anatomical treatises of the Corpus Hippocraticum at the Wellcome Trust Center for the History of Medicine in London .
When she finished the book in 1997, she took a position as Professor of Classics at Kyoto University in Japan. In 2002 she retired there. From September 2003 to September 2005, she was an Emeritus Research Fellowship at the University of St Andrews, awarded by the Leverhulme Trust for completing her book Two Hippocratic Treatises On Sight and On Anatomy . From 2015 she held honorary positions at the University of St Andrews and the University of Newcastle upon Tyne .
Craik first worked on marriage and wedding customs in ancient Greece as well as on Greek tragedy, especially Euripides , in order to later devote himself to various anatomical writings of the Corpus Hippocraticum.
