Elka Bakalova

Elka Bakalova (also written Elka Bakalova , Bulgarian Елка Бакалова ; born December 8, 1931 in Sofia ) is a Bulgarian art historian .

Elka Bakalowa studied Russian studies (graduated in 1964) and art history (graduated in 1964 from Viktor Lazarev ) at Moscow University . From 1970 to 2007 she worked as a research assistant at the Institute for Art History of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences in Sofia. There she received her doctorate in 1973 with a thesis on wall painting in the ossuary of the Batschkowo monastery ; In 1990 she completed her habilitation. Since 2005 she has been a corresponding member of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. From 2000 to 2007 she was Professor of Art History at the New Bulgarian University . She has also taught at the University of Sofia and the University of Veliko Tarnovo .

Her main research area is medieval Bulgarian and Byzantine art.
