history

The place name is first documented in writing in 1661. It goes back to the Danish words for alder ( elle , cf. altnord. Elri , ǫlr ) and for Kratt, Bruchland, Gestrupp ( kær , cf. oldnord . Kjarr, kjǫrr ) and means accordingly “Bruchland where alders are”. He has homonyms in England: Ellerker (North Reading of Yorkshire , Alrecher 11th year, Alekirr in 1139) and in France: Orcher ( Normandy , Aurichier 12th year).

Until the German-Danish War in 1864, Elkier belonged to the parish Quern ( Kværn Sogn ) in the Nieharde in the Flensburg office in the Hzgt. Schleswig . Later, for decades, the place belonged to the municipality of Quern , which was merged into the municipality of Steinbergkirche on March 1, 2013 .
