Mäder-Gutz studied graphics and sculpture at the Weißensee Art College from 1975 to 1982 . At the latest on her way to the West, which led her to West Berlin in 1987, Mäder-Gutz developed an individual canon of forms. Leaving the traditional image of man behind, she begins a profound examination of nature. Urgently deep inside the visible, the artist stages organic forms that are based on nature, but are not a copy of it. In stone sculptures, ceramic objects, drawings or graphics, there are floral motifs that exude an almost casual eroticism.

From 2002 to 2017 Ellen Mäder-Gutz was a research and artistic assistant at the University of Vechta . Since 2017 she has been teaching there as an Apl. Professor.
