Elmar Geulen (born June 12, 1957 ) is a German motorcycle racing driver . He holds nine world records under the pseudonym Mr. Hayabusa .

Career

Elmar Geulen studied business administration at the Aachen University of Applied Sciences . In 1976 he began to drive motocross races and was four times German champion in this discipline by 1982. In 1983 he switched to road racing, where he was able to qualify for the international A / I license within one season. Over the next ten years Geulen competed in numerous races in different classes: Superbike DM; 500 Grand Prix; Endurance World Championship (as the best private driver he achieved fourth place in the overall standings at the “24 Hours of Le Mans”). He achieved particular popularity through his 12 starts at the legendary “ Tourist Trophy ” (TT) on the “Isle of Man”.

He was one of the first German drivers to compete in the Asian Grand Prix races in Indonesia, Macau and Malaysia in the 1980s.

In 1993 Geulen switched to a racing class that was still new in Germany (imported from France), called Supermoto (in France “Supermotard”); a mix of motocross, dirt track and road racing. In addition to the races of the German championship series, Geulen contested numerous international races here, including the race for the "Golden Handlebar" in Paris (French: "Guidon d'Or").

In 1999 he decided to go into serious racing with the newly launched super sports motorcycle “ Suzuki Hayabusa ” - at the time the first series motorcycle to be registered with a top speed of 300 km / h in the registration papers.

Due to his sporting success, Elmar Geulen is authorized by Suzuki International Europe to bear the name of Mr. Hayabusa . This can also be found as an artist name in his official ID for the Federal Republic of Germany.

In 2002 Elmar Geulen achieved a world record together with the German extreme inline skater Jürgen Köhler : With the inline skater on the rear of the LKM-Suzuki Hayabusa, he reached a speed of 281.25 km / h. The Geulen / Köhler duo confirmed and improved this own world record in 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010.

Elmar Geulen was the protagonist in various TV productions; z. B. the joint contribution with the German professional racing driver Sabine Schmitz , which was filmed for the TV broadcaster DMAX on the Grand Prix track of the Nürburgring .

In 2010 Geulen began working as a motorcycle tester for the TV broadcaster SPORT1 (formerly DSF). On December 4, 2010 the duo Elmar Geulen / Jürgen Köhler was supposed to be part of the ZDF show Wetten, dass ..? contest the outside bet. Jürgen Köhler - standing on blocks of ice mounted under his shoes - should be pulled by Elmar Geulen with the LKM-Suzuki-Hayabusa over a distance of 1000 meters to a speed of over 200 km / h. This stunt was not broadcast because the current program was canceled for the first time in the 30-year history of this broadcast format due to a serious accident that occurred during one of the other betting shows.

In September 2012, Elmar Geulen set a new world speed record for street legal motorcycles with his Suzuki SD-Performance-Turbo-Hayabusa over 330.43 km / h (light barrier measurement) on the former runway for phantom military jets in the Rhineland-Palatinate horse field .

On May 20, 2013 Elmar Geulen had a serious accident at the 56th Bremerhaven Fishery Harbor Race and suffered a triple broken neck. After an operation and training, Elmar Geulen felt fit enough again in September 2015 to set a new world speed record, this time for street-legal motorcycles without fairing (so-called naked bikes ). On September 6, 2015, he drove on the Autobahn 31 with his LKM-Suzuki B-King in both directions at a maximum speed of 295.5 km / h.

On August 5, 2017, Elmar Geulen again set a new world speed record at an airfield in Rhineland-Palatinate.
The now officially severely disabled topped his own world record from 2012 with his 511 PS and 434 Nm strong SD-Performance-Turbo-Hayabusa powered by TurboTotal:
335 km / h are now the measure of all things for street-legal motorcycles with fairing.

On June 23, 2018, Elmar Geulen used the World Cup preliminary round match of the German national team and drove his LKM Suzuki on the deserted A1 motorway from Wisskirchen towards Weilerswist and back. On the second attempt at 8:54 p.m., 300 km / h were exceeded three times (301.3; 301.1 and 307.0 km / h) and twice in the south (301.3 km / h and 304.5 km / h) . The resulting mean peak value, the new world speed record for street-legal motorcycles without fairing, is now 305.5 km / h.

In addition to professional motorsport, Geulen operated and practices various sports:
