The Elmenteita Lake ( Lake Elmenteita , also Lake Elementeita or Lake Elmentaita ) is a strongly alkaline lake in the eastern arm of the East African Rift .
The lake belongs since 2011 as part of the " Kenyan lakes system in the Great Rift Valley " for UNESCO - World Heritage .
geography
The lake is located in the eastern part of the East African Rift Valley ( Great Rift Valley ). The lake basin is bounded in the north by the Menengai caldera, in the south by the volcano Mount Eburru , in the west by the ridge edge of the Mau escarpment and in the east by the Kinangop plateau and the Aberdare volcanic complex ( Aberdare Range ). The catchment area, which is only 590 km² in size, has little rain, which is why the hydrological budget of the basin is extremely negative and the lake without drainage is highly alkaline.
The lake is entirely located in Nakuru County in Kenya , about 100 km northwest of the capital Nairobi .
Flora and fauna
The lake is home to numerous flamingos and pelicans . There are no fish in the lake.
environment
Lake Elmenteita is part of the lands of Lord Delamere, whose father Hugh Cholmondeley, 3rd Baron Delamere, was one of the early settlers of British East Africa. There are extensive grazing areas on the shores of the lake.
