The Elonidae are a small family from the suborder of land snails (Stylommatophora). Today it only consists of two recent , monotypical genera, which are native to northern Spain and western France. Some authors also add a third genre from Southeastern Europe. However, a number of fossil representatives that have been known since the Eocene are also included.
features
The housings are strongly flattened to almost planispiral. The shell is relatively thin and translucent. The case shows 1 to 4 lighter radial lines followed by darker radial lines. The navel is open and cylindrical. The arrow pouch opens into the vagina, there is no neophore. The two mucous glands are club-shaped and enter the vagina above the arrow sac.
Occurrence, way of life and distribution
Today's species of the family live exclusively in northern Spain, northern Portugal, the Franco-Spanish western Pyrenees and in Brittany . Soosia occurs in Serbia, Romania and Bulgaria. The fossil representatives are also known from Central Europe.
Systematics
The family is divided into two subfamilies by Bouchet & Rocroi (2005). The subfamily Klikiinae mainly contains fossil representatives. Soosia Hesse, 1918, could be a more recent representative of this group, but is not well known.
