Elounda ( Greek Ελούντα ( f. Sg. )) Is a district of the municipality of Agios Nikolaos in the northeast of the Greek island of Crete . The municipality with an area of 23.954 km² and 2,193 inhabitants consists of the small town Schisma with 1,730 inhabitants, which is mostly identified as Elounda, six settlements and hamlets as well as the two uninhabited islands Kolokytha and Spinalonga .
location
The municipality is located in the east of the municipality of Agios Nikolaos along the coast of the Gulf of Mirabello . The port city of Olous , founded in archaic times, was on the land bridge to the Spinalonga Peninsula .
history
The ancient forerunner settlement of Elounda was called Olous and was an important port city of Crete. Olous was founded in the first millennium BC as a port of the influential, Doric mountain town of Dreros . The settlement lost its importance, however, when the east of Crete fell and the west rose in the 4th century AD. This sank Olous and the offshore peninsula was almost completely cut off from the mainland. The ruins of the ancient city are now below sea level, some of the walls can still be seen.
Nowadays Elounda is a vacation home with many posh accommodations in the area. From Elounda you can take a boat to the former leper colony on the island of Spinalonga .
