Elroy Chester (born June 14, 1969 in Jefferson County , Texas , † June 12, 2013 in Huntsville , Texas) was an American criminal and serial killer. He was executed in 2013.

Events

Chester was considered the most dangerous criminal in the criminal history of Port Arthur , Texas. The laborer was arrested after breaking into a house in Port Arthur on February 6, 1998. He had overpowered three teenagers there, threatened them with death, stole some valuables and raped two girls aged 14 and 17. The girls' uncle, 38-year-old firefighter Willie Ryman, who happened to be passing by, was shot dead by Chester. On the run, he also shot several times at Ryman's vehicle, in which his girlfriend was. However, this remained unharmed.

He was arrested a little later and the murder weapon was also seized from him. Ballistic tests and DNA comparisons have linked him to a number of other serious crimes. In total, he is said to have committed 25 break-ins, five murders, five attempted murders and three rapes. The crimes occurred between August 1997 and February 1998. The weapon also came from one of the numerous break-ins.

Chester was no stranger to the police. He had already been convicted of three burglaries before he was released in February 1990. He was arrested again in January 1994 for violating his probation requirements. In March 1997 he was released again on parole.

He finally confessed to the robberies of John Sepeda (78) and Etta Stallings (87), the lust murder of Cheryl DeLeon (40), the revenge murder of Albert Bolden (35) and the murder of Willie Ryman (38). He also confessed to the two rapes in February 1998 and the rape of a 10-year-old girl in August 1997.

It took the jury less than twelve minutes to sentence him to death in August 1998. The sentence and sentence were upheld by the appeals court in January 2000. A federal court overturned the death sentence in July 2002 on the grounds that Chester was mentally retarded and therefore should not be executed. The court relied on a decision by the Supreme Court that year. However, the 5th District Court of Appeals overturned the federal court ruling in February 2003 and upheld Chester's death sentence. All subsequent appeals have been denied, including a final pardon before execution before the Supreme Court.

He was executed by lethal injection in the Huntsville Unit in June 2013 .
