Elsa Werner (born February 15, 1911 in Hamburg ; † March 30, 2012 there ) was a German communist Jewish resistance fighter against National Socialism .

Life

Werner was involved in the socialist workers' youth , then in the KPD in Berlin and was arrested in 1934 and convicted of " high treason ". Eventually she was deported to the Theresienstadt ghetto .

When the destroyed Jewish community in Hamburg re-institutionalized after the Shoah and the end of the war, Elsa Werner became a member of the newly founded Hamburg Jewish Community in 1946 , where she gave advice and initiatives for former concentration camp prisoners and those in need. The chairman of the Hamburg Jewish Community, Ruben Herzberg, paid tribute to her services in 2009 with the words that she was “as a constant campaigner in favor of disadvantaged groups, an outstanding example of Jewish participation in the development of young democracy in post-war Germany”.

Awards

Elsa Werner received the Herbert Weichmann Medal in 2009 . This was awarded on September 13, 2009 in the community center of the Hamburg Jewish Community in the Talmud Torah School at Grindelhof. In 2010 she received the Herbert Wehner Medal from the trade union ver.di Hamburg, which is awarded to “people who are committed to fighting right-wing extremist activities, xenophobia and indifference”.
