Else Scheuer-Insel

Else Scheuer-Insel (born August 1, 1894 in Metz , † March 15, 1967 in Ramat Gan ) was a German-Israeli peace activist and feminist from the first half of the 20th century .

Life

Else Insel was born on August 1, 1894 as the daughter of the married couple Emil (* 1863) and Rosa Insel (1867–1947) during the first annexation in Metz and moved to the Rhineland after 1918 . From 1919 to 1921 and again from 1926 she worked as a theater reviewer for the social democratic newspaper Volkswacht in Trier. Since 1920 she was both a member of the Trier local group of the "International Women's League for Peace and Freedom" , and from 1927 to 1933 its chairman. In this function she took part in all important national and international congresses of the organization, about which she reported in detail in the People's Watch . Her experiences at the congresses were also topics in the women's group of the Trier SPD , where she was an active member until 1933 and ran for the city council. In 1922 she was a co-founder of the Trier Workers' Welfare Association (AWO) and became its second chairwoman. After the National Socialists came to power in 1933, she and her husband Arnold emigrated to Palestine via Luxembourg . From 1944 to 1962 she was both organizational and journalistic for the Israeli women's movement Women's International Zionist Organization (WIZO) .
