from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Elsebeth Gerner Nielsen (born January 5, 1960 in Favrholt , Frederikshavn Kommune ) is a Danish politician. In the government of Poul Nyrup Rasmussen IV , she was Minister of Culture from 1998 to 2001 . From 1994 to 2007 she sat for the radical Venstre in the Folketing for the Vejle Amtskreds .

Life

Gerner Nielsen was born on a small farm near Frederikshavn. That's where she grew up too. Her parents, Knud Jensen (1934–78) and Inga Poulsen (born 1935), were farmers. Gerner Nielsen's father took his own life when she was 18 years old. The major changes in agriculture had led to it. The father's suicide made Gerner Nielsen want to change society. In 1980 she was the first of her family to graduate from the nearby Frederikshavn grammar school. She then studied social sciences, sociology and economics at the University of Odense . She completed her studies in 1986 with a cand. Rer. soc. from. Then she was employed as a lecturer at the university. In 1983 she married Sven Gerner Nielsen. In the same year she gave birth to a daughter. After moving to Falster, she worked in various professions until 1992, including at the Udviklingscenter for Folkeoplysning og Voksenundervisning . In 1991 a son was born.

In 1992 she became a member of the Det Radikalische Venstre party and was elected to the party leadership the following year. In addition, she became a candidate for Folketing and then an elected member in 1994. She was particularly active in the environmental sector, but was appointed Minister of Culture in 1998 due to her longstanding cultural commitment. The marriage ended in divorce in 1999. Gerner Nielsen was a member of the Folketing until 2007. In 2007, she expressed her solidarity with the Enhedslisten candidate from Funen , Asmaa Abdol-Hamid . She said that if she chose, she would continue to wear a headscarf. Thereupon Søren Krarup from the Dansk Folkeparti equated the headscarf with the swastika. The following week, Gerner Nielsen had himself photographed with a headscarf and spoke out in favor of protecting freedom of expression , as she said that what mattered was not what was said about clothes, but what was said. Her action led to criticism from within the party, especially from Naser Khader , who accused her of supporting Islamists. Marianne Jelved described the action as a successful element in the game campaign for free spirit , tolerance and diversity.

Gerner Nielsen has been the rector of the Designskolen Kolding since 2008. She is now married again and has four children in total.
