Asmaa Abdol-Hamid ( Arabic أسماء عبد الحميد) (Born November 22, 1981 in the United Arab Emirates ) is a Danish - Palestinian politician, social worker and Muslim known in Denmark .

origin

Abdol-Hamid came to Denmark with her family in 1986. Your parents are Palestinian refugees. She is a trained social worker and then worked as a family counselor in the municipality of Roskilde .

Political commitment

Abdol-Hamid was a member of the Social Democrats until 2004 , but failed internally with her application for a candidate for city council in Odense . In 2005 she switched to the left-wing alternative Enhedslisten (EL). After the local elections in 2005, she was the party's first substitute candidate for the local council. She first got media attention when she refused to shake hands with male colleagues. Instead, she wanted to say hello with her hand on her heart.

In spring 2007 she ran for the Folketing at number 7 in the EL and announced that she would also like to wear the headscarf in the Danish parliament. In the November 2007 election, however, the EL only won four seats. Since 2008, Abdol-Hamid has largely withdrawn from active politics.

Prominent representative of Islam

Abdol-Hamid was the spokeswoman for eleven Islamic organizations that reported the daily Jyllands-Posten on October 27, 2005 for blasphemy and racism after it published various cartoons of Mohammed . The criminal case was finally abandoned on January 6, 2006. Only years later did it signal a rethinking of the cartoon controversy.

Abdol-Hamid became Denmark's first Muslim television presenter on a public service channel when she and her atheist colleague Adam Holm led the Adam og Asmaa panel on DR2 from March 29, 2006 . The organization Kvinder for Frihed (Women for Freedom) collected 500 signatures against Abdol-Hamid, as a devout Muslim, wearing a headscarf on the show. An uproar broke out when the Danish-Arab politician Naser Khader turned down an invitation to join the show after Abdol-Hamid declared that she would not shake hands with him either. Despite this criticism, she was able to continue working as a moderator. A total of eight episodes were broadcast.

Abdol-Hamid has repeatedly argued that while Arab culture is oppressive to women in many ways, Islam and Islamic values in themselves are not misogynistic. Therefore, she does not feel that wearing a headscarf is oppressive to women. She said among other things:

“The fact that I wear a headscarf doesn't mean that I am oppressed or poor. The values I live by are Islamic and not Arab. It is important to distinguish between religion and culture. Arab views are oppressive to women in many areas, and although I am an Arab, I do not make my decision based on culture, but against the background of my religion. Otherwise I would not have come as far as I am today "

In November 2006, Abdol-Hamid co-founded the Muslim women's network De Grønne Slør (The Green Veils), and in this context she referred to herself as a “Muslim feminist ”.

Allegation of treason

In an interview with the Socialistisk Arbejderavis ("Socialist Workers' Newspaper") on June 20, 2007, Abdol-Hamid said that she supports the armed struggle against the Danish occupation soldiers in Iraq:

“Denmark is part of the occupying power in Iraq and is 100 percent obedient to Bush and the USA. That is another reason why we must overthrow Anders Fogh Rasmussen's government. It is also necessary that we e.g. B. support the struggle of the Iraqis against the occupation. Too much has succeeded in labeling the resistance movement as a terrorist. Basically, it is an expression of the legitimate desire of ordinary people to lead a better life. "

- Asmaa Abdol-Hamid : Socialistisk Arbejderavis No. 270. June 20, 2007

In the following statements, she compared the Danish soldiers and the Iraqi insurgents with the occupation of Denmark by Nazi Germany and the resistance movement. The conservative Folketing candidate Rasmus Jarlov then reported her on July 24th for treason under Section 100 of the Danish Penal Code. Abdol-Hamid replied that she had not asked to kill Danish soldiers or representatives of other armed forces; rather, she emphasized the fundamental right of the Iraqi people to resist the occupation. At the same time, she called for the withdrawal of all foreign troops from Iraq.
