Elsie Locke

Elsie Locke (born August 17, 1912 in Waiuku as Elsie Violet Farrelly, † April 8, 2001 in Christchurch ) was a New Zealand writer, feminist and social activist.

Elsie Locke studied and graduated from the University of Auckland . This time of her life is shown in her book “Student at the gates”.

Together with Rod Donald, she founded the Avon Loop Planning Association (ALPA) and was involved in the development of the historic Avon Loop residential area in central Christchurch . She also campaigned for a more balanced understanding of New Zealand's history .

She received an honorary Doctor of Letters from the University of Canterbury in 1987 . The Elsie Locke Award, named after Locke, of the Library and Information Association of New Zealand Aotearoa is given annually for "outstanding publication for young adults".

She had four children, including Green MP Keith Locke and activist Maire Leadbetter.
